In 2008, guitarist/songwriter Kevin Gale was looking for a new way to express himself artistically. Kevin had already experienced some success with the 90’s era Canadian metal band Slik Toxik. Their song “Helluvatime” was in heavy rotation on MTV’s Headbanger’s Ball and Slik Toxik even earned the prestigious Juno award for Hard Rock Album of the Year in 1992. Even with these worthy accomplishments under his belt, Gale needed something new and after a chance meeting with lead vocalist Brad Searl, that something turned out to be Punishment.
Kevin Gale says, “I wanted 4 distinct members who each contributed on their own and stood on their own merits. I always and still have this vision of a band that audience members could identify with. As soon as the members came in it took off and became its own beast far surpassing anything I could have imagined.”
Pulling from influences as deep and broad as Led Zeppelin, Alice In Chains, and even a bit of southern rock flavor ala Molly Hatchet, Punishment is definitely not your run of the mill modern hard rock band. When trying to find a word to best describe the sound and songs of Punishment, the best word I could find was oppressive. The word “oppressive” is synonymous with words such as muggy, heavy, hot (A Little Dodgy), humid, sticky, (Mason Jar) and steamy (Too Far Gone). Just add melodic (Once We Were Gods and The Bridge) and you’ve got Punishment.
Since its inception in 2008, Punishment has performed hundreds of shows taking their music to the masses both headlining and opening shows for such great acts as Buckcherry, Rival Sons, Bif Naked, The London Quireboys, Harem Scarem, Rik Emmett, John Corabi, and Jake E Lee to name a few. The band has performed at capacity events at The Phoenix Concert Theatre, The Sound Academy in Toronto, The Ranch in Barrie, Ontario, and main stage at the Y108 Picnic in Hamilton, Ontario.
Rounding out their line-up with Mark Johnston (bass) and Pat Carrano (drums), Punishement entered Beach Road Studios in 2015 to begin recording their full length follow up to their 2009 EP Beautiful Suffering entitled Remnants of Things Left Unsaid with Juno award winning producer Siegfried Meier. In 2016, Punishment completed the recording process at Vespa Studios with the help of Harry Hess of Harem Scarem fame and released Remnants of Things Left Unsaid, their best work to date, in 2016.
Punishment’s lyrics tell stories just like that of the swampy, backwoods, bluesmen with a musical soundtrack that grabs you like a giant hand forcing you back into your seat for an attentive listen. Punishment is a band that can’t and will not be lost in the shuffle along with other cookie cutter modern rock bands. Punishment is an old soul in a new world and is a band that is looking to grow their tribe. In a nutshell, Punishment is something old, something new, something borrowed, and something dark as fuck. That, my friends, is Punishment.
